Our Work

Education and Youth Leadership Development Projects

Education has always been at the core of the foundation’s efforts. Our education projects continue to uphold our founders’ mission to empower the people of Mindanao through education.

Parent Mentoring (2014-Present)

The Parent Leaders Training and Parent Mentoring Sessions seek to bolster parental involvement and commitment in the learning of their children. This was implemented in 48 schools in the cities of General Santos, Iligan, Zamboang & Davao, and the province of Sarangani.

Summer Big Brother (SBB) (2014-Present)

This 15-day summer reading intervention is specifically designed for non-readers and frustration readers of incoming Grade 3 pupils. The main goal of this program is to lessen the number of frustration and non-readers with the help of the youth, teacher volunteers, and the community.

Quality Education for Sarangani Today (QUEST) (2007-2013)

CLAFI acted as the main NGO partner for the Quality Education for Sarangani Today (QUEST) project, an Education Program Awardee of the Galing Pook Awards. Through capacitating 1,500 teachers and 6,500 youth volunteers, the foundation assisted QUEST in helping 30,000 slow-readers improve their reading level; and encouraged 49,037 Parents to take responsibility for their children’s education. CLAFI also helped in the provision and distribution of 84,360 Grade 1 workbooks and 64,746 Grade 2 workbooks to Sarangani schools.

Barangay Education Summit (2014-2015)

This 12-part summit convened almost 200 people from every barangay in Sarangani Province. By collaborating with Barangay Captains to deliver the State of Barangay Education Address in their respective communities, these local government leaders developed a better understanding of the challenges in the education faced by the people in their area. As a result, each sector of these communities—PTA, teachers, student council, and Barangay Council—came up with a plan of action to address existing problems and establish aspirations for their children’s success.

Busog Lusog Talino (BLT) (2010-2016)

In partnership with Jollibee Group Foundation, this school feeding program endeavors to further increase the participation rate among public school students and eradicate undernourishment in public schools. BLT provided food to undernourished kids for 120 days every school year. From 2010 to 2016, the program has identified and helped 960 severely undernourished children reach normal nutritional status. BLT also saved them from the risk of dropping out.

National Assessment Test (NAT) Camp (2014-2016)

The NAT Camp presents an innovative way of conducting the NAT Review for the elementary NAT takers. It infuses the spirit of camping into the NAT review, thus transforming a simple “classroom” type activity into an “outdoor” activity where fun, peer teaching, leadership skills training and patrol camaraderie is part of the package.

The NAT Camp begins with the identification of the student campers’ competencies that need strengthening. Then, it moves on to the formulation of review topics and the creation of instructional materials to help the campers in their review. These materials are then displayed in the campers’ respective stations.

To implement this project, the foundation held a NAT Camp Orientation and Mentoring to 45 school administrators, teachers, and division heads of Sarangani & Iligan. As a result, 15 schools in Sarangani and 7 schools in Iligan successfully implemented a 1-month NAT Camp, reaching 1595 students in total. Of the 21 schools that participated, 13 had an increase in NAT results in its first year of implementation.

Solar Lantern Project (2015-2018)

Through this project, the foundation worked to provide light to schools with no electricity. In partnership with Panasonic Corporation, we distributed 640 solar lanterns to 96 off-grid Indigenous Peoples schools in Sarangani.

Today, the pupils use solar lanterns to review lessons and study at night, which they could not do in the past without access to electricity. The teachers also use the lanterns to make reports and are able to extend their working hours in their bunkhouses after sunset.

CARES Program (2016-2018)

The College and Career Awareness and Readiness Education Seminar (CARES) Program was designed to engage education stakeholders towards raising student awareness and aspiration for the best higher education pathway for them.

During S.Y. 2016 to 2017, the program provided training for three education stakeholders — school administrators; teachers and guidance counsellors; and parents and students.

Conducted in partnership with Edukasyon.ph, and in cooperation with Vibal Foundation and the Career Development Association of the Philippines (CDAP) Inc., the program engaged 5 schools (MSU CETD, Rogaya Bajunaid IS, Alabel NHS, Alabel Science HS and General Santos City NHS) and helped over 400 students to determine their initial dream career and Senior High School track.
